You know, as I think on training things more, something comes to mind. Sometimes you have to wonder who is training whom? Afterall, as we humans are trying to train our canine companions to comply with "house rules" about keeping the "den" clean (i.e., going outside to potty), we find we have to learn things as well.

For example, when puppy is only 8 weeks old, you have to learn to watch her to see when she's getting ready to relieve herself so you can hustle her outdoors and start teaching her that is the proper place to go. Usually, if a puppy has her nose to the ground for more than a couple of seconds, that is one of the signals that she's hunting a place.

You probably already know that puppies cannot go more than an hour of busy playing without needing to relieve themselves. So, you start watching carefully and take the furry child out when she starts to look around for a good place.

Between three and four months old, puppy begins to gain some control of bowel and bladder and you two have begun to agree on a signal that outside is a good idea. The people that will tell you their puppy was perfectly house-trained sooner, are perfectly trained themselves. I'm not saying that's bad, just that it's so.

Eventually, the lesson will sink in with the dog, but then, you run into the dog teaching you her signal for needing to go outside. My Jack Russell mix will go to the door and bark once, then jump up at the door. If I don't notice, she'll repeat it until I do.

My Border Terrier, on the other hand, has a much more subtle signal. He'll come and stand by my chair. At first, I thought it was his way of telling me he wanted attention or scratching. He would stand there facing more or less away from me, but near enough to be petted. He finally trained me to understand that is his way of asking to go outside. As a secondary method, he's managed to teach the JR mix to bark like she has to go out, but then, when I respond, it's him that has to go, not her. She'll back away from the door.

My "heart dog," a full-blooded Jack Russell Terrier, used to trot between me and the door. The more imperative that she go out, the faster the trips. She'd come and look at me, then trot to the door. Come back and look, then to the door, until I got the hint.

Now, you can modify this behavior to some extent by encouraging a particular signal be used. Scratch at the door, ring a bell you've hung from the door, come and place a paw on your arm, just about anything that will get you up out of your chair to let her out. Perhaps it's a certain tone to the bark--a rather high-pitched yip? Maybe it's that breathy whine with the mournful look?

The upshot is, to be able to teach your dog a signal you decide on for this particular behavior and need, you first must learn what the dog's signal is indicating the need. So, who is training whom?

C. Rogers Upson has been training dogs and studying them for nearly 40 years. Her website is Dog Potentials and she has two dog-related stores at Keeping to the Borders and Dog Potentials-The Store.

Clicker Training as an Effective Dog Training Tool

Urgent Press Release For Dog Owners:

Don't Let Your DOG Die Young Because Of Negligence

    >>  Click Here To Know 5 Simples Things You Must Do Now Right Now To Protect Your Dog From Disease

Clicker Training, is a training approach based on operant conditioning which comes from the fact that the reinforcer make use of a small mechanical noisemaker that produces clicking sound called the clicker. Clicker training can be used to train animals other than dogs like horses, cats, pigeons, etc.

The real challenge when training a dog, is in communicating accurately and at the right time when the dog is behaving properly. Conventionally when a dog did behave correctly, you praise him only after he move to some other behavior which may not be a desirable behavior and thus strengthening something that you might not want. Besides the right timing of the communication, your tone, loudness of your voice, pronunciation and speed may send misleading signal to your dog.

This contradiction is resolved by clicker training. Clicker Training create the clicking sound as a brief signal that dog can understand almost at once when he behave desirably which solve the problem of timing and prevent the problem of variation in comparison with the use of the trainer voice.

Clicker training do have its down side when too much dependence is placed on the physical clicker to signal to the dog, especially when there come a situation when you do not have the clicker on you or in a place where sound can be a problem such as in hunting environment or in a certain public places.

You should strive to combine the training of your dog with voice or hand command jointly with the clicker. The clicker can be used as the preliminary training as more command and cues are added. In this way by the time you start to fade out the clicker training there would not be any trouble communicating with your dog.

The aim in practicing clicker training program is to create association between the clicker sound and reward in your dog understanding. This association is created by clicking the clicker each and every time the dog behave desirably and after that giving him the reward which can come in a tasty treat that can be consume almost immediately. This is done repetitively from 10 -15 times per session. Some dog make the association faster than others.

One of the procedures to know if your dog has made the association is by permitting your dog focus to be shifted to other things before clicking. If the dog at once looks toward you upon you clicking the clicker, then most probably the dog has made the association. Once this is done, you can use the clicker to indicate desired behaviors. This is done by immediately clicking and rewarding your dog after the dog execute the desired behavior. The key is in the timing, clicking too early or too late diminish the effectiveness of the training sessions.

Again as said before, clicker training is only one of the training method, and it has its disadvantages, combining this training method with the others will improve the effectiveness of training your dog. Do learn and study the many practical methods you can do with this training method that can make this training a more fun and meaningful way which is so many that simply cannot be cover in this article.

Dog Grooming And Dog Training Made Simple

Urgent Press Release For Dog Owners:

Don't Let Your DOG Die Young Because Of Negligence

    >>  Click Here To Know 5 Simples Things You Must Do Now Right Now To Protect Your Dog From Disease

We may have made our pets dependent of a comfortable life, in which the master takes them out for casual walks and feeds them on command, after having cuddled them behind their giddy ears, but a natural instinct for self-grooming will never be gone, and the proud owner should sustain this instinct. This process is a daily and a weekly one, so dog grooming training is necessary in order to make it easier for the pet and for you too. As funny as a bubble bath may seem to our kids, your furry friend may find it strangely irritating, unless you follow some simple training guidelines to make him go through the ordeal of grooming: from clipping his toenails, brushing his fangs, to smoothing that cute rich fur of his, or sleek glossy hide with a welcomed bath. That is the reason why dog grooming training sessions are required, and the good news is you don’t have to have a PhD or a BD for this; you do need some special tools, rewards to motivate the pet and the persistence of your school teacher when telling you about logarithms. The result will be a satisfying one, though, and your dog will be fit to walk on a cat walk!

    A Dawdling Process

There are these few main activities that are compulsory when speaking of a dog grooming training session: the brushing of his teeth, the clipping of his nails so as not to scratch that beautiful leather arm chair you just bought or to gather germs that make him prone to diseases and taking care in every possible way of his fur, less or more existent, depending on the breed: the coat of a groomed dog must be glossy, healthy and resistant. In order to do this, you will imminently annoy the dog by touching him in forbidden places: his aggressiveness might be aroused and he may act strangely every time the process recurs. The most important thing is not to hurry up, dawdle here and there, with smooth caresses and sprinkle the dog grooming sessions with several rewards, so that he develop a conditional instinct of pleasure specifically in these times. The first activity is the brushing of his mean “fangs”, to maintain their health and that of the gums too. The muzzle of the dog is another sensitive area so pat him gently and caress the nose and when he pulls up his lip, you will be able to position the toothbrush. Make him feel good during this by enhancing his self-esteem, speaking to him slowly and soothingly and offering him a reward: you shouldn’t be surprised if this training hint will enable you to brush his teeth often and even turn it into a spa for your pet, an enjoyable one.

If you desire to clip the nails, the identical gentle behavior and treats are required, except that you have to touch his paws and to press them to see clearly the nails: it is not a particular pleasant thing for your furry friend so be patient and persistent: the time you are investing in the dog grooming training will be recovered soon, when he will sit calmly every time you want to perform the task a bit faster. The brushing of the pet’s coat of fur is definitely not that difficult or disagreeable, like brushing his teeth or clipping his toenails, to some extent. However, when delicate areas such as his back end or tail are involved, things have to be taken slow: make him comfortable first, when touching these parts of his body, give him rewards, speak soothingly to him, pat him carefully and in the end he will lighten up and allow you to act there as well: operate with slow strokes of the brush in the back side and at the tail to obtain an ideal grooming where it is genuinely needed.

As it has been said, rewards and persistence are the main ingredients to performing a proper dog grooming training, achieving both a better relationship between you and the dog, and make it a more enjoyable task with the permission of your pet.

Finding A Dog Training Book That Works For You and Your Dog

Urgent Press Release For Dog Owners:

Don't Let Your DOG Die Young Because Of Negligence

    >>  Click Here To Know 5 Simples Things You Must Do Now Right Now To Protect Your Dog From Disease

When searching for a great dog training book, look for those dog authors who use humane training methods and have similar goals as yourself. Choose a book that uses training that you feel comfortable with. It does not make sense to get a book that suggests using shock collars if you'd never put one on your pet. Think about how your dog relates to the authors training methods. If your dog is an older pet, then don't buy a book meant for training misbehaving puppies. Look for a book that coincides with your dog, your beliefs and the results that you're looking for.

If you're looking for a dog training book to help you with your new puppy, then find a book that offers obedience training and early behavior problem solving. Are the techniques used in the book easy enough to carry out? Do you have access to any tools needed, such as a choke collar? Remember, just because the cover of the book shows a puppy that is as cute as your own, doesn't mean the techniques in the book work. Look for good reviews on the book and pet owners who say the book gives good and useful information.

Some dog training books come with videos which can be very helpful. If you are a visual person, a video or books with clear illustrations will be beneficial. If you still aren't sure which dog training books are best, ask friends, family and even your veterinarian for recommendations. Most dog owners will tell you about books that have practical ideas that work. Don’t count on just one book to tell you everything about training. You may need to purchase a book on obedience and another on potty training. Most authors of dog training books own pets themselves and will write about the way their own dog was trained. This may or may not work for your dog, so be open to new suggestions and look through a few books before deciding on one particular way of training.

Dog Training - Training Tips For Easier Training Sessions

Urgent Press Release For Dog Owners:

Don't Let Your DOG Die Young Because Of Negligence

    >>  Click Here To Know 5 Simples Things You Must Do Now Right Now To Protect Your Dog From Disease

When you are training your dog there are a lot of things to take into consideration. It can be slightly overwhelming and you can easily get frustrated with it all. Below is a list of some tips that might help you to make your training sessions with your dog easier.

I know when there is teaching of any kind its easy to lose track of the fun side but its important to maintain the fun factor when training a dog. You want the dog to have good feeling towards the times when you train it not to dread the time.

When you are feeling frustrated and you are not happy it's a good idea to stop the training session until you are in a better mood. A good way of maintaining a good mood is to make the sessions short. Going for too long increases the chances of you getting frustrated and getting the dog distracted or confused. Try to keep the sessions under 20 minutes a couple of times a day. You can do that for about 4 times a week or so.

Another good strategy is to increase the times you praise your dog in relation to corrections so that it knows when it is doing well. You reinforce the good points. Do not correct behavior in a nasty way do it in a firm but calm manner. Its better to teach by reinforcement than by harsh treatment. Of course its important to not tolerate bad behavior but do not correct this harshly just be firm that this is unacceptable behavior.

When you notice that the dog is a bit overwhelmed its better to either stop the session for a bit and come back to it or to get the dog to do something it finds familiar so that it is on familiar ground. This will remove its confusions and when its stable again you can try something different.

Its very important to be realistic with your expectations because most people can be a bit too demanding and this can cause pushy behavior which might confuse the dog. Go at a patient pace just think of how long it takes to teach a child and realize what you are asking of the dog. Be patient and consistent and results will follow.

This are just some basic tips that will help you out in your training journey.
